ENG: Dr. Zachary M. Howlett is an Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Yale-NUS College at the National University of Singapore, where he holds a courtesy joint appointment in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology and serves as an Associate in the Centre for Population Research. Dr. Howlett’s research examines meritocracy, migration, and demographic change in China and the Chinese diasporas. He is the author of Meritocracy and Its Discontents: Anxiety and the National College Entrance Exam in China (Cornell University Press, 2021), which is based on two years of field research in rural and urban Chinese high schools (2011–13). He has been a fellow at the Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies in the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs and is a member of the board of the Society for East Asian Anthropology of the American Anthropological Association.
