The Pale God
By Aryeh Tepper
Imagine God not as a benign force infusing the universe with love and sustaining it with mercy, and not as a stern judge smiting sinners from on high with his cosmic zap-gun, but as a grandfatherly figure, kind but, truth be told, somewhat out of it, sitting in a corner, tolerant of the various paths his children have chosen, content when surrounded by his grandchildren, desiring only to be recognized and see his offspring stay connected. It would take an outrageous sin for him to get up out of his chair and say something that might cause even slight...

"The Goalkeeper, in its refreshingly disorienting way, in its shaking-up of the academic red tape that is draped over most other scholarly offerings, is a must have for any bona fide Nabokovian"

Jewish Thought in Dialogue. Essays on Thinkers, Theologies, and
Moral Theories
DAVID SHATZ
Academic Studies Press, 2009
480 pp., $65.00, ISBN 978-1-934843-42-0
This volume is a collection of essays on Jewish thinkers and Jewish thought, written by the author between 1990 and 2008. It is divided into two parts: the first one deals more with the history of Jewish philosophy and thought and the interpretation of Jewish religious sources than with philosophical topics; the second one is devoted to philosophical problems and arguments from the point of view of Judaism.
The titles of the last three essays show how the interest and sympathy of the author is for thinkers who try to unify Jewish tradition according to the Orthodox view and modern culture. The same project, i.e. the building of a modern Jewish Orthodoxy, appears in the first three essays. Therein, Shatz interprets the Guide of the Perplexed as maintaining Maimonides’ Orthodoxy with regard to Jewish law and at the same time Maimonides’ openness to Aristotelian science and philosophy. Biblical ideas are considered by the author not so much as an expression of human reason – a reason which certainly is not theoretical, but refers to an ethics centered on God’s uniqueness, and therefore different from the Greek Logos – but rather as teachings of a particular religious tradition and experience. These teachings become meaningful for philosophical reflection if analyzed with reference to philosophical problems such as the relationship between freedom and God’s Providence, the existence of evil in a world created by a just and benevolent God, religion as opposed to ethics.

This is a valuable book, which offers many themes and insights, arising not only from Judaism, but also from human life. All of them deserve careful examination.

From the Russian Review: "Grinberg’s illuminating study will be of use to students and scholars interested in modern poetry, comparative literature, Jewish and Russian twentieth-century literature, and the representation of historical memory. It is an important book that sheds new light on the history of Soviet literature and brings to the fore Slutsky’s powerful responses to the manifestations of antiSemitism in the Soviet Union and to the collapsing Soviet monumental style and ideology in the postwar period." -Alexander Smith, University of Edinburgh
